Analysis

Bertalan Szekely is one of the most significant artists involved in painting in the 19th century in Hungary. This painting is a remarkable work, because for the first time in Hungarian art shows the impact of Japonism in it. Judging by the look and features, the model seems not a Japanese woman, but the items included in the work testify to Japanese culture and spirit and give information about them. Bertalan Szekely met with Japanese original works and objects during the exhibition of East Asia, held in the Hungarian National Museum in 1870. This exhibition inspired him to create this picture next year.
