Biography

January Lee Thompson was born in Los Angeles, California. She began playing music from an early age, becoming classically trained in several instruments including piano. Her mother Deanna Thompson Feghali being a concert pianist and teacher flooded the home with countless hours of practice. She attended University of Southern California but did not like the classical approach to singing and writing and gradually taught herself sequencing, music engineering, sampling and production. In the early 2000s she started collaborating with different dj's and producers in the London underground electronic scene. After being introduced to Ramin Sakurai(Supreme Beings of Leisure) January and Ramin recorded an album that they took to Bruno Guez CEO of Quango Records. Consequently, a few months later she signed her first record contract to independent record label Quango Records. Her debut album, "Careful What You Tell The Sky", was released in 2008 to reviews that compared her to Tori Amos, and Kate Bush. The album, however, had little commercial success and she eventually found herself without a record deal. She began writing with Charles Webster in 2009 for their project January Tuesday. The EP was released on his label in Miso Records in 2012,Over the next year they released singles several of which were placed on TV. In 2013 She began writing and toured with London based Little People, her self titled EP was released on her label, January Music, in 2015. She also began writing with Copenhagen based producers Steffen Aaskoven (Bliss) and Thor Finland in 2013. Her Latest album, produced on their production company Music Without Words, Whelmed, will be released in October of 2016. It is a combination of smart production, masterful arrangements, and a willingness to follow melody and tune above and beyond genre or format. Her songs melt inextricably into each other with a usual sonic palette of synth oscillations and atmospheric reverb, advancing and receding within them like shadows. Percussion is employed sparingly as the rhythm is organized into the subtlest of beats that collide gently against the classical instrumentation and the tender string arrangements by the Copenhagen Cello Quartet in a way that seems to clarify each. Her distinct sound continues to develop. In each of her songs the sparse backing allows Januarys rich and emotive vocals to create warmth and sweetness while the vocal overdubs create an echoing, almost haunting feeling via lyrics that tale a longing for love and togetherness and intertwine metaphor and the process of human relationship to the world and each other providing layer upon layer of luxurious, uplifting, undeniably spiritual warmth. Sounding, like January.
