Perrett began working for The Australian newspaper in 1979, in a variety of roles at the paper's Melbourne, Sydney, London and New York offices. In 1989, Perrett worked as a news editor The Sydney Morning Herald before moving to television as a reporter for the Nine Network's Business Sunday.
