Rock art and the world heritage convention janette deacon
Janette Deacon (née Buckland, born 1939) is a South African archaeologist, writer and professor. She studies the development of tools found in cave sites in the Western Cape.

Biography
Deacon was born in Cape Town in 1939. She graduated from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1960, after which she worked as W.J. Talbot's research assistant. Between 1962 and 1972, she lectured at UCT. She became the head of the Department of Archaeology at Stellenbosch University in 1971. Deacon was the editor of the South African Archaeological Bulletin from 1976 to 1993.
Deacon became the first chairperson for Heritage Western Cape (HWC) in 2002.
In 2016, she earned an honorary doctorate in literature from UCT for her writing and scholarship on human origins in South Africa.
