History

Plans for the school were announced in March 2013 with the intention to locate in central Norwich. Jane Austen was approved by the Department for Education, on 22 May 2013, to open in September 2014.

Academic organisation

The school will eventually have places to educate 1,100 pupils aged 11–18. The school specialises in English and humanities, and all pupils are required to study a language until age 16. There are also classes on cultural education and the compulsory language study also includes Latin. Students are taught in fixed mixed ability classes for KS3, and plans for KS4 have not been confirmed. The school does not set homework for its pupils, but instead has an extended school day finishing at 4:30pm on Monday and Friday. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the school remains open until 5:30pm for pupils to take part in "Electives", an activity of the pupils' choice such as choir or football.
