Born in Ingol, Preston, lifelong Preston North End fan Proctor came through the youth academy at Preston North End. A return of 40 goals in 28 appearances– in his first youth team season of 2008/09 was an excellent start to scholarship life.

On 27 January 2010, Proctor was handed a 2 12-year professional contract. He made his professional début on 2 May 2010, coming on as a substitute against Reading in the 4–1 defeat at the Madejski Stadium.

On 13 August 2010, he joined Stockport County on a 28-day loan aged just 17. The next day, Proctor made his debut, coming on as a substitute, in a 0–0 draw against Wycombe. In September, Proctor's loan spell at Stockport was extended for another month until October. On 28 September 2010, Proctor set up a goal for George Donnelly in a 2–2 draw against Accrington Stanley. He made seven appearances for the club before returning to Preston. He made his first team debut in the final game of the 2009/10 season, coming on as a substitute in the 78th minute away at Reading.

Proctor was on the fringes of the first team squad during the 2010/11 season and had to wait until the last game of the season to score his first senior goal for Preston North End in a 3–1 win against Watford

He played 7 games in 2011 pre-season, scoring 10 goals, including a hat-trick against Fleetwood Town and during the early 2011/12, he featured in a three-man strike-force, consisting of himself and fellow strikers Iain Hume and Neil Mellor. However, all three got injured at one point or another down the line – Proctor's injury being a double hernia. He returned to action before Christmas, but failed to re-create his pre-season and early season form, not scoring again for the rest of the season.

Swansea City

Proctor attracted interest from Crystal Palace, Blackpool and Swansea City. On 18 August, he signed with Premier League club Swansea City. However, his time at Swansea City was 'frustrating', making no appearances at all in any competition. On 26 October 2012, Proctor joined Shrewsbury Town on a month's loan. The next day, Proctor made his debut, playing 90 minutes, in a 2–2 draw against Colchester United. Proctor would make only four appearances despite his promising debut(three in league and one in FA Cup).

Crawley Town

Proctor left Swansea City to join Crawley Town in League 1 on 16 January 2013 for an undisclosed fee. Proctor was a regular during his time at Crawley, scoring 15 goals in 60 total appearances. He turned down a contract offer at the end of the 13/14 season leaving him free to move back North and sign for Fleetwood Town.

Fleetwood Town

On 24 June 2014, Proctor joined League 1 Fleetwood Town on a two-year deal for a free transfer. Proctor joined Bradford City on a one-month loan on 22 January 2016 as part of the transfer deal that saw Devante Cole move to Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed fee. The loan move was made permanent on 1 February 2016 when Proctor signed a deal with City until the end of the 2015–16 season.

Bradford City

Proctor scored on his debut for Bradford in a 1-1 draw with Port Vale. He then scored his first goals since signing for the club permanently in a 2–1 win against Doncaster Rovers on 12 March. Bradford later went on to secure a place in the League 1 Play Offs with Proctor scoring in the Play Off Semi Final against Millwall.

Bolton Wanderers

On 5 July 2016, Proctor signed a two-year contract with Bolton Wanderers after joining on a free transfer. Proctor again scored on his debut for his new club- a goal for Bolton in a 4-2 EFL Cup loss against Blackpool on 9 August 2016.

Rotherham United

On 3 July 2017, Proctor move to Rotherham United for an undisclosed fee, signing a two-year contract with the EFL League One club. After an impressive pre-season for 'The Millers', Proctor scored his first competitive goal in an EFL Cup first round tie against Lincoln City. On the 26th August Proctor was stretchered off after a tackle with Charlton's Chris Solly. This resulted in Proctor being sent to hospital for scans. It revealed that Proctor had damaged his ACL and that he would require surgery, almost certainly ruling him out for the remainder of the 2017-2018 season.
