He is currently playing with the Manitoba Moose in the AHL as a prospect within the Winnipeg Jets organization of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the Jets in the seventh round (190th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

As a youngster, Phillips played as a forward until age 12, when he decided to switch positions, as he was drawn to the goaltending position. He played for the Michigan Tech Huskies in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

During the 2014–15 season, Phillips was nominated for the Hobey Baker award, given to college hockey’s most outstanding player in the United States. Playing for Michigan Tech, Phillips amassed a 28–9–2 record, with a 1.74 goals against average, and 0.933 save percentage. Phillips helped lead Michigan Tech to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to St. Cloud State in the regional semi-finals. Phillips returned to Michigan Tech in 2015–16 for his final college season.
