Recruited from Surrey Hills, Victoria, Cooper debuted with the Fitzroy Football Club in 1984 and was a fringe player, playing 26 games over four seasons.

Since retiring from playing football, Cooper has developed a painting career, primarily focusing on large-scale historical sporting portraits. In 2008 he was commissioned by the Australian Football League to create a painting to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first game of Australian rules football. He has also created many Team of the century or Dream Scene composite portraits where players from different era's are shown at their prime in a single locker room.
