Nitties was born in Melbourne, Australia. He suffered from juvenile arthritis as a child and young adult, which restricted his flexibility. This caused him to have to take pain killers to restrict the pain from his back. In 2003, he finished second at the Western Amateur to Ryan Moore in 19 holes. He turned professional in 2004.
