Major-General James Fitzgerald Martin CB CMG CBE (12 June 1876 October 1854 – 14 February 1958) was a distinguished officer of the British Army.

Birth and family

Martin was the son of Colonel W.T. Martin. He married Mary Latimer Hawks Moody (1883–1960), daughter of Colonel Richard Stanley Hawks Moody, at Exeter Cathedral in 1906. The couple had 1 daughter, Mary Charlotte (b.1909).

He was educated at Bath College, Edinburgh University (MB, ChB, 1899), and the University of London (DPH, RCS and P., 1911).

Military Service

Martin entered the army in 1899. He was promoted to Captain in 1902, Major in 1911, Lieutenant-Colonel in 1917, Colonel in 1927, and Major-General in 1931. He retired in 1935.

He served in South Africa from 1900–02, for which he received the Queen’s medal with 4 clasps and King’s medal with 2 clasps) and World War One between 1914 and 18, for which he was mentioned in despatches 5 times and received the CMG, CBE, and the 1914 Star.

He was employed between 1940–43 by Ministry of Health as Inspector of Hospitals and Assistant Hospital Officer No. 3 and No. 6 Regions and employed by Ministry of Pensions, Southern Region between 1944–47.

He served as Hon. Surgeon to the King and Hon. Surgeon to the Viceroy of India.

He was also a Chevalier de la Couronne of Belgium.
