Jamali's complex surfaces and mystical imagery have been compared to the neo-expressionists Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz. His gestural techniques link him to Jackson Pollock and the New York School, while the pre-eminent art critic Donald Kuspit argues that Jamali's singular method requires its own name—Mystical Expressionism. Jamali paints with his feet, making his signature foot print on every work he produces. He imbues his work with a spirituality unique to abstract figures, and prides himself on defying tradition with his female nudes, none of whom are modeled after real people.

Many of Jamali's innovations are now linked to the Jamali Foundation in Winter Park, Florida, which is the largest living-artist foundation in the United States.

Mystical Expressionism

Jamali (artist) JAMALI The founder of Mystical Expressionism announces the launch

Mystical Expressionism is the title given to Jamali's artistic style by acclaimed art critic Donald Kuspit. It is based on the ancient Sufi tradition of dancing to induce a trance like state, which Jamali witnessed during his time in the Rajasthan Desert. Ground pigments are applied to a prepared cork canvas, which Jamali dances on. The pigments are then chemically bonded to the canvas. The result is a highly textured, intricate surface. Jamali's canvas dancing is carried out in a trance-like state, leaving the residue of this state alive on his canvas in the form of the marks of his movement. The pigments are in effect the desert sand, and the marks are memory traces of the trance. Many of Jamali's surfaces also have leaves, twigs, even the remains of insects embedded in them because they are made outdoors, and therefore subject to the elements. Clearly, a temporal process is involved in Jamali's work, and the heavily encrusted result has the rich patina of an archeological find.
