Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi (born July 30, 1959) is an Emirati academic and the current Director-General of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) in Abu Dhabi, UAE. He is best known for authoring The Mirage (Al-Sarab), a book on political Islam in Arab and Muslim societies. In 1995, Hassan II, the late King of Morocco awarded Al-Suwaidi the Legion of Merit (commander degree). On December 17, 2002, former French Minister of Defense Michele Alliot-Marie awarded him the "Ordre National du Merite" for his prominent role in strengthening relations between the UAE and France. In 2013, the president of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan awarded him the "Head of State Merit Award".

Biography
During his career, Al Suwaidi made significant contributions to building partnerships between the UAE and other countries. In addition to being the current Chairman of the board of directors of the Cancer Patient Care Society (Rahma) of UAE, he is also member of the board of several national and international institutions. These include the Emirates Institute of Diplomacy, Zayed University, the Faculty of Policy and International Affairs at the University of Maine, and the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, Georgetown University. In particular, in recognition of his efforts and prominent role in the strengthening of bilateral relations between the UAE and several countries, he received a number of international distinctions. For example, in France, he was awarded in 2002, the National Order of Merit by Michele Alliot-Marie, French Minister of defense; in Morocco, he received the Key to the city of Fez from the Kingdom of Morocco on March 5, 2013. in Egypt, he received the Key to the city of Alexandria from the Governor of Alexandria General Tareq Mahdi Abdel-Tawab on September 28, 2014;
Education
Al-Suwaidi earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from Kuwait University in 1981. Then he was awarded a Master of Arts in 1985 and a Ph.d. In 1990 in the same field from the University of Wisconsin.
Career
Al-Suwaidi, an expert in Political Science, is the Director-general of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), an academic institution established to promote scientific research methodology in UAE. In 1992, Al-Suwaidi was a visiting lecturer at the University of Wisconsin in charge of the course Politics of the Middle East and North Africa. He also held a professorship position at the Department of political science of the UAE University from 1991 to 2000. Al-Suwaidi is member of numerous local and international science organizations in the Middle East region and also the Chairman of the Board of directors for the Scholarship Office of the Ministry of Presidential Affairs since 1998. He has been member of the Administration board of the Emirates Diplomatic Institute in the UAE and also of the UAE National Media Council. Al-Suwaidi is a former Chairman of the board for the Emirates National Schools and a former Council member of Zayed University. In 2009, he was appointed Chairman of the Higher Committee for the Preparation of the National Strategy for Childhood and Motherhood in the United Arab Emirates. In 2012, he became member of the UAE’s Supreme Council for the National Defence College.
During his career, Al-Suwaidi has been a contributing member of several international boards such as the international advisory board of the E-City for Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, the Arab Thought Forum in Jordan, the Emirati-Swiss Friendship Platform and Casa Arabe of Spain.
In the United States, he is a member of the Midwest Political Science Association and the American Political Science Association. He is also a board member of Georgetown University's Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS) and a member of the Board of advisors at the School of Policy and International Affairs, University of Maine.

Al-Suwaidi has published several articles on topics including Gulf security, democracy in Arab and Western societies, women and development, and local perception of the Second Gulf crisis. His articles have been published by many international journals including The Journal of South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, 1994; Security Dialogue, 1996; Whitehall Series by Royal United Services Institute for Defence Studies (RUSI), 2000; and Indian Journal of Politics, 2000.
