The Kalar community is distributed all over India under different names: Kalar/Jaiswal in Uttar Pradesh, Kallowar in Bihar and Jain Kalar or Dadsena in Orissa and Maharashtra.

Origin

The term Kalar or Kalal has been originated from King of Kallul - a place in Northern India. The name according to Russel and Hiralal(1916) is derived from Sanskrit Kalyatpala. The Jain Kalar are numerically dominant and economically and educationally advanced. There were 2, 19, and 56 Kalar inhabiting Central Provinces and Berar. They are Marathi speaking both inside and outside house.

Social Reforms.

M.K. Gandhi requested the Kalar community to abandon their traditional business. Most of the Kalars followed his plea and left the Liquor business. Though this community is known as for their ancestral Business, they have a reputation of being Non Drinkers.
