Jagner is a small town and a nagar panchayat in Agra district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Overview

Jagner is famous for stone and mustard oil extraction. The town of Jagner is spread out around a hill-fort which itself is located on a precipitous hill, 122 meters above ground level. The fort houses a popular pilgrim destination, the shrine of Gwal Baba, so named after the cow loving saint who lived in the cave centuries ago. Located at the tip of the southern leg of Agra district that juts into Rajasthan, it is about 57 km from Agra city itself. Direct buses ply from Agra to Jagner and can take anywhere between 1.5 to 2 hours. The name Jagner is derived from the name of king "Jagan Singh" who was a ruler in the 13th century. The language of Jagner is similar to Brijbhasha. Jagner is a town dominant by Brahmans. the town consist 85% Hindus and 15% Muslims. educational conditions still a big concern here and the town is mainly dependent of farming.occupational options are quite less. The king raja jagan singh was the famous king of the jagner. His wife name was queen jamuna kanwar. She was so beautiful queen of that time around the agra. The king jagan singh was the aternal uncle of the great wariour alha and udal of mahowa. The king was killed by prathviraj chouhan in saving the life of brahmajeet the son of king chandel parmal of mahowa. There is a huge description about these kings and the wariours in the famous book alha khand in parmal raso. The ALHAA is a famous programme in the eastern northern india. The jagner is the famous center of ALHAA programme in the western uttar pradesh, eastern rajasthan and the northern madhya pradesh. The Kirori lal swami was the famous singer of ALHAA of this center. He was the continuously 50 years winner of ALHAA tournament in this region. This is the biggest record of winning this tournament. An area was named after the name of Kirori lal swami in jagner. He was invited many times in sanskar bharti programme in agra and firojabad lok kala development programme. The ALHAA is celebrated in the time of rainy season.The AlHAA is now continued in present time by the Shri ram pal sharma the son of kirori lal swami. He is also famous in present time around the region.

As of 2011 India census, Jagner had a population of 1,12,986. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Jagner has an average literacy rate of 52%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 62%, and female literacy is 40%. In Jagner, 18% of the population is under 6 years of age.

History

During British rule on India, Jagner was ruled by Rao Sahab of Jagner. After freedom Jagner was merged into INDIA.
