Jacob Galván was born April 9, 1992 in Harlingen, a small Texan town in the Rio Grande Valley. Although he was not exposed to any type of music education until the sixth grade, Jacob took quickly to percussion after joining the local school band. As a teen, Jacob taught himself how to play the guitar, piano, sing, and also furthered his development in percussion. After graduating high school, Jacob became a student at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX where he studied Pharmacy and Chemistry for one year. Knowing that music was his true calling, Jacob moved closer to his home and enrolled at TAMU-CC in the Fall of 2011.

He studied under the direction of Arlene Long and Dr. Richard McDonald (TAMU-CC). After graduating from TAMU-CC in May 2015, Jacob now composes and conducts large scale works for chamber ensembles, orchestra, piano, organ, and choir. His works have been featured in a variety of venues throughout Corpus Christi.

Composition style

Jacob writes in a neo-baroque style that is a composite of influences from his favorite composers, most notably Johann Sebastian Bach and Henry Purcell. Jacob's pieces are highly contrapuntal, focusing more on solid horizontal melodies versus vertical harmonies. The main composition techniques used in his works are imitation and fugue.
