The school was established in 1954 and named after the historical novel Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott, part of which was set at Ashby de la Zouch Castle. Now an academy, it caters for students between the ages of 11 and 14. Between 2004 and 2005 a new science block was constructed at the school. The school in 2013 had a new dinner hall and cafe dining area. Also in 2013 the school removed most of the lockers. The school has four houses, named Earth, Fire, Water and Air.
