About istanbul international community school

Istanbul International Community School, the first international school established in Istanbul, was founded in 1911 to educate the children of international professors at Robert College. The name of the school was Robert College Community School until 1979, when it was changed to its current name, Istanbul International Community School (IICS). IICS is located on two campuses, one in Rumeli Hisari for ages 3–9, and a purpose-built facility opened in 1999 in Büyükçekmece Karaağaç for ages 3–18.

IICS is a:

  • non-profit,
  • PK-12,
  • coeducational,
  • non-sectarian school.
  • The student body of over 500 students includes more than 40 nationalities. The students are required to hold foreign passports to be admitted to the school. IICS is authorized by the International Baccalaureate to offer the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and the IB Diploma Programme. IICS was one of the first schools in the world authorized to offer all three IB programmes. IICS was re-authorized by the IB in 2007 and had a successful 5-year review in 2011/12.

English is the language of instruction, with French taught as a second language in grades 1-6 in the primary school. Turkish language and culture is taught in both the primary and secondary schools. French, Spanish and German are offered in the secondary school. For students who have not yet achieved English fluency, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is offered instead of French/Spanish/German.

IICS is globally accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. IICS was re-accredited by a joint evaluation by CIS and NEASC in 2008. IICS is also a member of the Central and Eastern European Schools Association, the College Board, European Council of International Schools and the Educational Records Bureau. IICS is partially sponsored by the United States Department of State's Office of Overseas Schools.
