An Islamic political party is a political party that promotes Islam as a political movement by offering nominees for election in a democracy - of which there are several in the Islamic world. They are important to distinguish from Islamist parties, that promote Islamism and seek to forge an Islamic state in which the primary basis for government is Islamic religious law (Sharia), and militant Islamic groups, which may not necessarily run for election. Islamic parties may, on occasion, resort to militant strategies.
