The college is situated in Irlam at the extreme western end of the metropolitan district of Salford on the Cheshire and Warrington border. The M60 lies four miles to the east and the M6 lies four miles to the west of the college. The A57, joining Manchester and Warrington is the main road through the district. Irlam and neighbouring Cadishead is a mixture of industry along the Manchester Ship Canal with some agriculture on the surrounding moss lands.

There are approximately 990 11- to 19-year-old pupils on roll. The school is a specialist Business and Enterprise and Maths and Computing College, with world class partnerships helping further our students education. The first Sixth Form entry was in 2006 and there are currently 115 pupils studying a range of courses.

History

The college is an amalgamation of several earlier schools.

Irlam and Cadishead High School closed and was knocked down in 2011. The pupils and staff have moved next door to a brand new building and renamed as Irlam and Cadishead College. The new college was opened by Sir Bobby Charlton in June 2011. It features a variety of modern learning spaces, outdoor classrooms, a new sports hall, gym and a flood-lit all-weather pitch. Budding performers will also have a new music technology suite, performance hall and dance and drama workshops. There is a community centre on the school grounds where the neighbourhood management team along with staff from the health, youth, arts and park ranger services are all based. This is about residents, pupils and local services all working together for Irlam and Cadishead. In September 2014 then headteacher John Ferguson announced his early retirement following poor results in that summer's exams. Ferguson retired before a permanent replacement could be found and so, in the interim, David Lythgoe of Golborne High School has taken charge of the school and has begun a programme of improvements. In the school's recent Ofsted report, it was rated as 'Requires Improvement' which was disappointing as the school had previously received the 'Good' rating. Poor exam results and poor teaching were to blame for this.
