History

The Irish Open is the second oldest tournament in the world, first played two years after Wimbledon began. When it began in 1879 the tournament had the distinction of being the first event to feature men's and women's singles and doubles tournaments as well as a mixed doubles competition. It was considered one of the main tournaments until World War I. Until 1973 the tournament was played on grass courts. In 2010 it was a men's only event.
