Nissim (Gabi Oterman), at age 11, finds himself inextricably drawn to his deceased brothers widow, Rosa (Michael Bat-Adam). When Nissim discovers that Jewish law requires him to care for her in his brothers absence, he makes his intentions known. Sensing the boys grief, Rosa allows him to live with her over their families protests. As years pass, Nissims boyhood fascination becomes romantic love, even as Rosa becomes involved with Eli (Yossef Shiloah), a more age-appropriate match.
I Love You Rosa (Hebrew: ?, translit. Ani Ohev Otach Rosa) is a 1972 Israeli film directed by Moshe Mizrahi. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was also entered into the 1972 Cannes Film Festival.
This story centers on the Jewish practice that requires an unmarried brother to marry the childless widow of his dead brother. In this story the younger brother is only 12 years old when his brother dies. The requirement is avoided by a legal fiction, but as time passes in the story, the situation changes.
