Introduction

Each new era and society demands a new breed of professionals. Just as the industrial age heralded management sciences, the information age is engendering the domain of information sciences. With this belief and the concept of an institution focusing exclusively on information studies and research in India, ISiM was established. ISiM was conceptualized and established in 2005, by the University of Mysore, with seed grants from the Ford Foundation and Bangalore based Informatics India Pvt. Ltd., and in partnership with some of the leading information schools in the U.S, namely the School of Information at the University of Michigan, the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, and the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. To strengthen its academic linkages, ISiM signed memorandum of understanding with School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, USA, University of Michigan, USA and Dalhousie University of Canada in 2006.

Being a new age school for the knowledge economy, ISiM also defines a new educational model – Inverse of Distance Learning – in which, the students and the school are in Mysore, but, the faculty and mentors are a distributed network of excellence drawn from ISiM’s partners and other institutions.

ISiM is directed by an independent Governing Board, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, with eminent academics and industry stalwarts as members. ISiM is managed today with some of the finest minds from Academia, Industry and the Government and has on its governing board personalities like N. R. Narayana Murthy, Chairman and Mentor Infosys Technologies and others like Prof. M. Anandakrishnan, Chairman-IIT Kanpur, Dr.N. Seshagiri, Former Director General, National Informatics Centre, New Delhi, Dr. S. Sadagopan, Founder Director- IIIT, Bangalore, Mr. M. N. Vidyashankar, Principal Secretary, Department of E-Governance, Government of Karnataka, Mr. Prasad Ram, Director and Center Head, Google India, among others.

With redefining the academia-industry interaction through a process of continuous engagement of students and the industry mentors in open community projects being one of the main visions of ISiM, it envisions to be an innovative institution, shaping and defining the multidisciplinary domain of information, while innovating new institutional models and focusing on preparing information professionals who can help solve the information asymmetry.

ISiM recognizes the multidisciplinary nature of information, and envisions being a ground breaking higher education institution, addressing the challenges of defining this domain. The challenges of the information age require educational institutions to continuously evolve, and ISiM has special focus towards innovating new institutional models. With emphasis on redefining the academia—industry interaction, ISiM encourages continuous engagement of students and industry mentors in Open Community Projects, and by doing so, aims to be a world class institution of higher learning, which prepares professionals who can build information systems to help solve the information asymmetry.

ISiM graduates find career opportunities as Chief Information Officers (CIOs), Information System Developers, Content Managers, Management Information Analysts, Information Marketers, Knowledge Portal Managers, Knowledge Management leads, Web / Online Content Analysts, Data Analytics / Business Intelligence Specialists, Data Warehousing Professionals, MIS Officers, Archivists, Librarians etc.

Evolution of ISiM

The seed of ISiM was sown during a discussion among like minded peers in the academia and some more members from the industry, and dozens of brainstorming sessions later during the annual Knowledge Summit "INFOVISION" in September 2005, Dr. Som Mittal, the then Director of HP and the current President of NASSCOM officially launched ISiM. From 2005, ISiM has evolved from being a mere concept to reality, and has defined a new educational model in this process - Inverse of Distance Learning.

ISiM recognizes the multidisciplinary nature of information, and envisions being a ground breaking higher education institution, addressing the challenges of defining this domain. ISiM celebrated its Graduation Day on Monday, 11 April 2011. In her Welcome Address, Prof. Shalini Urs, Executive Director of ISiM, drew attention to the objective and tradition of celebrating graduation days. She said, a graduation day is an academic cultural tradition and is a rite of passage essentially symbolizing "Inculcation, transformation" and "Return to Society in a changed status." The purpose of ISiM Graduation Day Celebrations program is to build a sense of new roles as ISiMians and solidarity.

Dr. P. Anandan, Managing Director, Microsoft Research India, Bangalore, giving the commencement speech, outlined various kinds of aspirations that we, Indians, have seen over the ages, taking examples from Indian PURANAS and history. He said the only reason why we keep innovating, is that we don't stop aspiring. He stressed upon the fact that we should always aspire towards reaching greater heights, and work hard towards achieving them. He gave the Ten Commandments for Success that included: being brave; believe in "no boundaries’; failures as learning opportunities; not being limited by success.

Also speaking on the occasion was the chief guest for the ceremony, Shri M. N. Vidyashankar, IAS, Principal Secretary, e-Governance, IT, BT and ST, Government of Karnataka. He underscored the importance of innovation and said that is the only way for organizations to compete in the current global scenario. He also said that one of the main hurdles in the path of constant innovation was the non-acceptance of technology by members of the general public. Shri Vidyashankar highlighted with an example each for the success of using technology at their department and for the failure of an innovative education system due to the non-acceptance of technology. He also threw light on the fact that though Indians have significantly contributed to the research and innovation successes at Silicon Valley (California), they have not played such a major role in research activities in the Indus Valley (India), and advised the students to work towards a career of innovation.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, Prof. V. G. Talawar, in his presidential address stressed on the three Ds: Desire; Determination; Dedication.

The dignitaries distributed the degree certificates to the graduates. On the occasion, two graduates, Mr. Nabhajit Ray (M.Tech Class of 2009) and Mr. Nikesh Narayanan (M.Tech Class of 2010), were awarded the "Parvathamma Subbaraya Gold Medal", instituted with munificent grants from Dr. Chudamani, an alumnus of the University of Mysore and currently, the Deputy Librarian at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Prof. Ramakrishna Ramaswamy giving commencement address at the Graduation Day celebrations of International School of Information Management (ISiM) here on Sunday said the paucity of data and its reliability is an issue of considerable importance. He called upon the students to be creators of manageable information.

Dr. H S Ranganath, director of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (Bangalore), called upon University of Mysore to give autonomous status on the lines of ISiM to other well-equipped departments. "Once the autonomy is given to deserving departments, they can prepare their own syllabus and can easily adapt to the changing system. First, facilitate and later felicitate. If this is done, innovations can be seen in education," he added.

Prof. V G Talawar Vice Chancellor of University of Mysore was also present.

34 students of M.Tech 2009-11 batch graduated from ISiM this year. The dignitaries distributed the degree certificates to the graduates. On the occasion, Mr. Raghav V S received the "Parvathamma Subbaraya" gold medal for being the top scorer of the batch.
