UBD has opened its door to international students since its early beginning. Early on, ASEAN students make up most of the international students of UBD. The diversity is expanded today with more coming from East Asia (China and Japan), Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The International Club of Universiti Brunei Darussalam works with the Persatuan Mahasiswa Universiti Brunei Darussalam (PMUBD), university administrators, and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) student organizations in order to address issues of concern for international students.

UBD is near to Jerudong Town and the well known Empire Hotel. UBD is adjacent to the Tungku Beach; that many of its buildings, in particular the student accommodation - The Core which overlook the beautiful South China Sea.

UBD is such a friendly environment and international students will feel at home with the array of clubs and things to do. There are also a variety of programmes to ensure new students transition into UBD through The International Student Service Unit of Student Affairs Section.

Brunei is a peaceful sultanate, rich with culture and heritage. There is plenty of opportunity to experience its vibrant culture, to explore the natural wonders of Brunei land, and Brunei rivers and seas while studying at UBD. Nevertheless, a 10 minutes drive from UBD is the Brunei International Airport that serves international airlines as well as budget airlines, making the outside world closer to UBD. Brunei is very central, with a flight distance of between 2–3 hours to other ASEAN countries. Students therefore during term break can getaway to close by cities like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Saigon, Bangkok, Jakarta and many more. Two hours drive away is Miri (Malaysia), Brunei's closest neighbour city.
