The Intelligent Letter Sorting Machine or iSLM is a device of Royal Mail that sorts letters. It can read handwriting.

History

The Royal Mail has around sixty-six of these devices. They began to be installed in the mid-1980s. Royal Mail introduced OCR (optical character recognition) machines between 1987 and 1991.

The machines (SOLYSTIC Star), as well as CSS machines (SOLYSTIC Mars), are made by SOLYSTIC SAS of Bagneux, Hauts-de-Seine, France.

Function

It can process around 36,000 items an hour.
