History
The institute opened in 1970 as a Regional Technical College and adopted its present name on 7 May 1997. Dr. Brendan McCormack has been President of the Institute since September 2016 and Colin McLean is the current Registrar.
Development
Among other Institutes of technology in Ireland, in terms of student numbers, only the Dublin Institute of Technology outranks its science department..
In sports, the college has had successful ladies' soccer and men's Gaelic football teams, the latter winning the Sigerson Cup three times in a six-year period up to 2005. The college also caters for other sports such as indoor soccer, hand gliding, surfing and rugby.
In technology, IT Sligo's "Team Hermes" won the software design category of the 2011 Microsoft Imagine Cup (a world student technology competition held in 2011 in New York).
In 2012 construction began on a new science block and canteen. This involved the demolition of the old 1970s building and the building of a new 3 storey school of science and canteen. The extension, completed in 2014, houses the new School of Science to cater for the growing numbers of science student entering the Institute.
Since 2002 IT Sligo has been actively developing as an online distance learning provider and as of September 2016 has over 1900 online learners registered on over 65 online programmes.
