General Information

The Institute for Biocomputation and Physics of Complex Systems (BIFI) (Spanish: Instituto de Biocomputación y Física de Sistemas Complejos) is a research Institute of the University of Zaragoza that promotes interdisciplinarity in order to face the big challenges of innovation and development. BIFI is formed by researchers from the University of Zaragoza and other Spanish and foreign Universities and institutions. Our aim is to develop a competitive research in Computing, Physics of complex systems and biological systems. In addition to the research in basic science, the promotion of technology transfer between university and industry is an essential goal for us.

Contents

For this purpose, BIFI has the input of researchers from different fields, whose collaboration is producing important synergies, in particular, supercomputing experts, physicists working in materials science, in complex networks, quantum chemistry and biologists working in structural problems like drug development and protein folding.

The Supercomputing Laboratory hosts most part of our computing resources: The powerful cluster "Terminus", our nodes in European projects related to Grid Computing technologies, massive storage servers, an openSUSE mirror, etc. BIFI operates Caesaraugusta, a supercomputer with 3,072 cores and 25 TFLOPs, which is the current node of Aragón in the RES. This computing infrastructure is supplemented by more than 10,000 volunteer computing cores (the Ibercivis project) and two special-purpose machines (JANUS I and Janus II) devoted to material science calculations that are equivalent to several thousand cores. Finally, we have recently opened CESAR, the Aragon Supercomputing Center that adds state-of-the-art computing facilities to provide service to many end-users in our autonomous region. The laboratories of Biochemistry, Electronics and Crystallography also have important resources and latest generation equipment for the different scientific tasks related to the areas of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

History and Scientific Projection

BIFI was founded in October 2002 by a group of scientists from the Faculty of Science of the University of Zaragoza, belonging to the Theoretical Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology departments. Since 2010, BIFI is located at R & D Building, Campus Río Ebro, Actur, Zaragoza, Spain.

The main objective of BIFI is to promote interdisciplinary and scientific collaboration between biologists, physicists and computer scientists.
