Geography

The community itself is outside, but near, portions of the Lassen National Forest. Terrain in the area is mountainous and forested.

The ZIP Code is 95921. The community is inside area code 530.

The town is reached by the Skyway, which makes a loop from State Route 99 in Chico, through Paradise, eventually connecting eastward with State Route 32 near Butte Meadows.

History

Historical variants to the name suggest the community's history may have included mining. Variant names listed include Enskeeps Diggins and Inskip Town.

The town was named in 1857 for the discoverer of gold here, Mr. Enskeep.

A post office operated at Inskip from 1862 to 1915, with a brief interruption in 1873.

Present day

Inskip contains two buildings, the larger one being the Inskip Inn. The remnants of a pioneer-era stone chimney are all that is left of a third building.

The town is home to a large collection of heavy machinery, including bulldozers, tractors, and an M35 2-1/2 ton cargo truck, all of which are used in the winter months to clear snow off of the road and to dig out the snowed-in buildings.

Visitor attractions

The town is a popular spot for off-road motorcycle and quad enthusiasts because of the many dirt roads leading out of it that are ideal for riding. Many riders set out from Inskip and make their way to the highlakes, with Lake Philbrook and Lake Almanor being the most popular destinations.

A valley named Blowhard Ravine, USGS feature ID 1723786, exists about 0.9 miles (1.4 km) at 140 degrees off true north. It is not labeled on the Stirling City quadrangle but does appear in the National Geographic Names Database as of 2006. At the bottom of the ravine runs the West Branch of the Feather River. Inskip Pioneer Cemetery is located almost exactly 1-mile (1.6 km) due south of town on a hill overlooking Skyway Av. The cemetery is located at latitude/longitude 39°58′33″N 121°32′20″W.
