Independent Youth Theatre is a platform for youth performance in Ireland. Based in Dublin and established in 2003, the Independent Youth Theatre (or IYT) produces new Irish works - both directed and written by young people. It accepts members between the ages of 14 to 24 and is the only youth theatre in Ireland to be run by a democratically elected committee of youths. The company performs in variety of theatres throughout Dublin, with many of its members continuing to work in drama and the performing arts. The group is a member of the National Association of Youth Drama (NAYD). The company has also taken part in the Dublin Fringe, and was a regular at the Everyman Palace Theatre's New Connections Festival, until its relocation to the Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge. The Independent Youth Theatre continues to work closely with Kildare Youth Theatre, participating in the Wyett Festival of Human Rights in 2008.
The group rehearses in The Basement Studio on Clarendon Street and performs at different venues in Dublin, with previous productions having been staged in the Back Loft, The Helix, The Everyman Palace Theatre, The Ark and The Mill Theatre. Previously they were based in Muckross School in Ranelagh and the College of Further Education in Rathmines. Much of its work consists of new writing and devised pieces, which it has toured to other Youth Theatre venues around Ireland. In addition, IYT hosts two youth theatre festivals each year, in December and May, providing other Youth Theatres without local performance spaces an opportunity to perform in Dublin.
The youth theatre is run by an elected committee. The committee includes a treasurer and a welfare officer, as well as two member representatives from the company.
