Independence Day of Turkmenistan (Turkmen: Garaşsyzlyk baýramy, Гарашсызлык бaйрaмы) is the main state holiday in Turkmenistan. This date is celebrated in Turkmenistan annually on October 27.

History

Turkmenistan participated in the referendum held in March 1991 in an attempt to preserve the Soviet Union as a renewed federation with the 98.26% voters approved.

Following the events of the failed coup that took place in August, the Supreme Soviet of the Turkmenistan decided to adopt the law "About Independence and Bases of a State System of Turkmenistan" when it declared independence on October 27, 1991. After disintegration of the USSR the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic became one of the last to the Soviet Socialist Republic on the former Soviet Union, proclaimed the state sovereignty.

Celebration

On the Independence Day of Turkmenistan through all Central Asian republic pass mass festivities. Already there was a tradition, on the eve of a holiday to award outstanding citizens of Turkmenistan — cultural figures, art, sports, policy. Quite often "festive amnesties" to the people who once have violated the law (generally on unintentional and to not serious crimes, and also women and minors appear condemned). On a central square of Ashgabat carried out military parade.

In many cities of the country are held festive events and concerts. Salutes and fireworks in honor of independence finding became also traditional.

In Turkmenistan on October 27 and 28 days are the festive.
