He broke through into the first team in the 2010–11 season, in which Lille won Ligue 1, and became a regular starter in the league and the UEFA Champions League over the following four seasons.
Aston Villa

Aston Villa paid Lille £9m for the service of Gueye, fighting off interest from Southampton, and he signed for the club on 10 July 2015. On 8 August 2015, Gueye made his debut in a 1–0 away victory over AFC Bournemouth. On 19 January 2016, Gueye his first and only goal for Villa in a 2–0 over Wycombe Wanderers in the third round replay of the FA Cup.

In total he made 35 league appearances for Villa in the season where they were relegated from the Premier League.
Everton
After Aston Villa were relegated from the Premier League, Everton triggered a release clause in his contract, reported to be £7.1m and signed Gueye on a four-year deal on 2 August 2016. He made the highest number of successful tackles and interceptions per game across Europe's top five leagues over the 2016 calendar year. Gueye scored his first league goal for Everton in a 2–0 victory over Sunderland at Goodison Park on 25 February 2017. He became the first player in Europe's top five leagues to win 100 tackles in the 2016–17 season. Gueye scored his first goal for Everton in the European Competition on 17 August 2017 in the UEFA Europa League Play-off round first leg against Hajduk Split when he slotted in an inch-perfect pass from Wayne Rooney. The match ended with Everton winning the match by 2-0.
International career
Gueye made his international debut for Senegal in 2011, and has appeared in FIFA World Cup qualifying matches for them. He also represented them at the 2012 Olympics, at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations and at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
Style of play
Football journalist Adam Bate believed that Gueye was the Premier League player closest to N'Golo Kanté. He has also helped Ronald Koeman change the team's style of play after taking over from the previous manager. Gueye was described as Everton's midfield dynamo and catalyst for their pressing game. His former colleague Romelu Lukaku asserted that Gueye improved the team in midfield by making so many challenges. He allowed Everton to control the game a lot more due to his work rate, passing and his dedication. Gueye was the top tackler in the Premier League 2016–17 season.
