History

Al-Obeidi joined the Libyan Air Force in 1984 and flew thousands of hours on a range of warplanes.

Death

On 6 July 2016 Al-Obeidi's MiG-23 crashed in Benghazi’s Ganfouda district. There were conflicting accounts as to whether Al-Obeidi was shot down or whether he crashed because of a technical failure or pilot error. Soldiers said the warplane was hit by a missile as it pulled out of its attack run, but air force sources said the crash was the result of a mechanical malfunction.
