Profiles

Icon Water Limited is a water and wastewater public utility that is a Territory-owned corporation wholly owned by the Government of the Australian Capital Territory. The company's only voting shareholders are the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory.

Icon Water Limited trades principally under the name of Icon Water and provides drinking water and wastewater services to the Australian Capital Territory. Icon Water Limited is also a 50% owner of ActewAGL, a multi-utility provider of electricity and gas services.

Icon Water was re branded from the previous company ACTEW Corporation on 4 May 2015. The reasons for changing from ACTEW Corporation to Icon Water are listed as brand confusion with electricity and gas supplier ActewAGL, the name ACTEW no longer being relevant in the company's operations, disconnect between the company's origin and future, and the change was recommended by the company Board, endorsed by the shareholders.

History and relevant legislation

The origins of the Icon Water Limited (previously ACTEW Corporation) go back to the Australian Public Service. The functions were transferred from the Commonwealth Government to the ACT Government in 1962 when the Australian Capital Territory Electricity Authority was established. Its functions were then transferred to the Australian Capital Territory Electricity and Water Authority in 1998; and the current corporate entity was established under the Corporations Act (Cth) in 1995. In addition, the company now has obligations under the Utilities Act 2000 (ACT), Water Resources Act 2007 (ACT), Environment Protection Act 1997 (ACT), Water and Sewerage Act 2000 (ACT) and the Public Health Act 1997 (ACT).

In June 2012, the then ACTEW Corporation, did not renew ActewAGL's contact for the management and operation of the water and sewerage network of the ACT and surrounding area, managed since 2000.
