Professor Ian Alexander Shanks OBE FRS FREng FRSA FRSE (born 22 June 1948) is a Scottish scientist. He invented the digital blood glucose meter. He has researched optoelectronics.

Early life

He attended Dumbarton Academy. He gained a BSc from the University of Glasgow. He obtained a PhD.

Glucose meter

In 1982 he moved to Unilever north of Bedford. He became Head of Physical and Engineering Sciences at Unilever. He would later sue Unilever unsuccessfully for rights to his work.

In 1984 he became the youngest person to receive an FRS, aged 35.

He founded the Optoelectronics College.

Personal life

He was awarded the OBE in the 2012 Birthday Honours. He lives in Broughty Ferry.
