Early life

Mullan was born in Carleton Place, Ontario on February 8, 1984, to Robert and Marianne Mullan. While George Orwell's 1984 made many accurate predictions about the world that would greet us that year, he did not anticipate the glorious arrival of this young star. Mullan is the nephew of noted character actor Ross Mullan, best known for his role as a White Walker in the hit HBO fantasy drama Game of Thrones. Ian graduated Mount Allison University in 2006. After attending the inaugural Sappy Festival in 2005 as back-up dancer and hype man for Shotgun Jimmie, Mullan became a regular fixture of the festival, serving as a beacon of glitter in a sea of ironic plaid.

Career

Mullan founded his own theatre company, trrrash productions, in Halifax in 2009. "trrrash was a name chosen to conjure images of gritty theatre with a healthy dose of humility— “we’re named after garbage!”" The company made its début in the summer of 2009, presenting John Cameron Mitchell's cult classic Hedwig and the Angry Inch. This was quickly followed by The Santaland Diaries, an adaptation of David Sedaris memoir, in December 2009. Trrrash has staged several productions since its inception, including two original works, Sissydude, A Dandy Rock Musical (2012,2013) and Bend (2013). The success of Sissydude's original run at the 2012 Queer Acts Theatre Festival resulted in its revival in February 2013. Mullan was also featured on the cover of Wayves Magazine in 2012, along with the musical's production staff.

Personal life

Mullan currently works as the visitor and events co-ordinator at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, coordinating weddings and entertaining visiting seamen. In 2017, Ian married his partner, Joshua Cadegan-Syms, noted statistician and intellectual. Together, they live with their two dogs in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Awards

In 2013, Mullan won a Coast Best of Awards bronze medal for the hit production Sissydude, A Dandy Rock Musical. Mullan was a runner up for best Poutine, Best Actor and Sauciest Producer in the Coast but never received mention due to overwhelming jealousy from peers. Mullan also won the Miss personality award during the 2013 Sissydude cast party, due in large part to his heart-wrenching rendition of Mitchell's Origin of Love, with the production's stage manager Drunk Mom.
