Terminology History

The Microsoft Learning Gateway (MLG) is a Web-based collaboration, communications, and content delivery framework that serves the education industry. MLG helps to create integrated e-learning solutions for primary and secondary schools and higher education institutions.

Contents

Delivering education-specific functionalities, an MLG-based e-learning solution means that every associated teacher, student, and family can be connected from their home or school to the Internet through a proxy or firewall server, or through a hosted service. With Microsoft Exchange Server, each user can have a secure e-mail address. Using Web-based services, students can participate in lessons and complete assignments online through the portal, both from home and at school.

A Connected Learning Community [1] is a Microsoft term that describes a virtually-connected e-learning environment that supports students, teachers, and parents, allowing them to tackle education issues in a more facilitated way that is not dependent on time or place.

It also includes collaboration tools and the sharing of media and information between all education stakeholders. Within such an e-learning community, local education authorities and central administration can track performance, generate reports, and control schools.

Integrating Learning Platforms and Management Information Systems (MIS) into the education environment supports personalised teaching and learning.
