History

HydroPoint was founded by Chris Spain, Chris Manchuck and Peter Carlson. For 20 years before this, Spain sold emerging growth technology startups as a way to combine his interest in environmental sustainability with his expertise in technology. He founded the company when he noticed that water would eventually become a big issue and that lack of data further complicated it.

The company's core solutions address smart water management which is needed because of the increasing price of water often due to drought, loss of water due to evaporation, social concerns, and over watering. In order to counter this, the company has engineered a sophisticated weather based irrigation system which is connected to its climate monitoring center. The system incorporates site-specific data such as elevation, types of plants, soil and relative exposure to sunshine along with external real-time data. In all, HydroPoint smart irrigation solutions, under the brand name WeatherTRAK, collect more than 8 million data points daily, from more than 40,000 sensors. It then uses a process called the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model developed by a number of government agencies as the basis for its weather-modeling software. The WeatherTRAK brand of irrigation controllers provides precise scheduling based on the system's algorithms that evaluate the collected data.

The company offers site evaluations, irrigation system efficiency audits, leak detection, weather analytics, installation or upgrade of current systems and ongoing support and training.

In June 2016, the company acquired Baseline Systems, an irrigation control systems company. Baseline soil moisture sensors complement HydroPoint's evapotranspiration technology.

The company has worked with Caltrans, Starwood, Monterey Schools, WalMart, Kaiser, Kohl's, Lockheed Martin, city of Santa Clarita, CA, Ford, Campbell Union Schools, Coca-Cola, Hilton, Jack in the Box, the University of Arizona, multi-family housing companies & communities, including Greystar, Aimco, BRE, Shea Homes, The Irvine Company as well as the cities of Charleston, Houston and Santa Barbara.
