Hungarian football clubs have entered European association football competitions (UEFA Champions League/European Cup, UEFA Cup/Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, UEFA Intertoto Cup and the now defunct UEFA Cup Winners Cup) since 1955, when MTK Budapest, Vasas Budapest and Budapest Honved took part in the inaugural Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. In the European Cup three clubs reached the semi-finals. In the 1957-58 season Vasas Budapest, in the 1964-65 season Győr and in the 1973-74 season Újpest. In the Champions League era two clubs could reach the group stages. In the 1995-96 season Ferencváros qualified for the group stages while in the 2009–10 season Debrecen could qualify for the group stages. The only Hungarian club who won any European trophies are Ferencváros by winning the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup 1964-65 season.
