History

The Institute was established and legally recognized on the 20th of June 2014 by way of a decree signed by the Italian Minister of Education.

Campus

Medical students greatly benefit from studying on the Humanits group's flagship hospital campus.

"Humanitas University is built by the hospital, inside the hospital. All the tutors are specifically trained and work as medical doctors or nurses in the hospital. All campus facilities are located within the hospital area."

Thanks to an investment of more than 20 million euro, a new campus is under construction that will be ready for the 2017/18 academic year. The new campus will cover a total area of over 20.000 square meters. Allowing students to train in low risk situations, the campus will include a Simulation Center of about 1.000 square meters. It will also house 4 operating rooms, 3 multimedia rooms, 2 ambulatories, 1 emergency room, 4 rooms for clinical and surgical skills, 1 microscope room and 1 wet lab.

Organization and administration

The University is part of the Humanitas Group, a private hospital group that also operates the Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan. Humanitas Group is part of a larger company, Techint Group.

In 2016 Humanitas University has signed an agreement with Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, United States, to facilitate admission of Benedictine College pre-med students into its Medicine and Surgery degree program.

Academics

The University offers the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery degree program taught entirely in English.

In addition, postgraduates students can enroll in one of 11 speciality schools. The speciality degrees include: General Surgery, Cardiovascular Diseases, Digestive System Diseases, Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Diagnostic Radiology. Masters' degrees are awarded in the fields of Endoscopy and Urology.

The university also offers a Cardiovascular MR Imaging course, "Humanitas University’s advanced postgraduate course in Cardiovascular MR Imaging aims at training professionals able to perform cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging independently, in their respective professional areas." It is tailored for technologists with strong core expertise in the fields of magnetic resonance imaging or cardiology.

The Endocrinology, Metabolic Disorders and Nuclear Medicine programs are developed with the collaboration of other leading teaching institutes.

Thanks to an agreement between Humanitas University and Benedictine College, the students admitted to the Humanitas University program are able to take the United States Medical License Examination Steps 1 and 2, making them eligible for a medical residency in the United States.

Career Prospects for Graduates

The career prospects for graduates are promising for those planning on working within the EU or outside it. "As a non-state University recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education (see the Decree by the Ministry of Education), Humanitas Degrees are recognized across all of Europe for accessing the medical profession. In fact, Humanitas University is included in the IMED (International Medical Education Directory) database and in the World Directory of Medical Schools."

"Access to medical specializations in the US (residencies) is regulated by the US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Humanitas University’s Degree allows a graduate to apply for the USMLE since Humanitas University is listed in the IMED database. Humanitas University prepares its students for the USMLE and provides a curriculum in line with the educational standards requested." To do so, Hunimed has activated a collaboration with the US National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME®) with the following aims:

  • Reviewing the educational program – curriculum and student assessments – to meet U.S. standards;
  • Providing Advice on:

  • The usage of the most appropriate assessment instruments applied in North America and International medical schools.
  • How best to prepare students for these assessments.
