Hugo Asencio

Hugo Asencio (born Puerto Rico; April 9, 1942 – August 19, 2004) was a composer, poet, teacher and patriot. He composed over 100 plenas, and was instrumental in leading several protests against the Marines occupation of Vieques, a Puerto Rican islet which was ultimately turned back over to the commonwealth. His legacy is enduring, as several songwriters, composers, and singers have requested his writings for performance.
