Education and early life

Gauthier is a 1976 graduate from Port Townsend High School where he was a member of the high school's state tournament basketball team and state championship track team.

After high school, Gauthier went on to study business and play college basketball at Skagit Valley College before completing his undergraduate degree in Finance from Washington State University in 1981. Gauthier's sports career began during 1983-84 when he studied for his master's degree in Sports Administration from St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. During this time, he also worked in the athletic department at the University of Miami. Upon graduation, Gauthier worked in the athletic department at Washington State University before returning to school to study for his Ph.D. in Sports Management from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. It was in Carbondale where Gauthier began his coaching career.

Coaching career

Gauthier served under Rich Herrin as an assistant coach at Southern Illinois University from 1985-87. He also served under Ed Green at Roanoke College (1987-1988) and under Warren Friedrichs at Whitworth University (1988-1990). In 1990, Gauthier was hired as the head men’s basketball coach at Eastern Oregon University (1990-1993) where he compiled a three-year record of 31-50. During the 1992-93 season, the Mountaineers had the schools second best season in 20 years, finishing second in the Cascade Conference, winning their first game in the NAIA playoffs since the 1969-70 season, before losing to the eventual NAIA national champion Willamette University Bearcats. Gauthier also served as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Warburg College (1993-1996) where he compiled a three-year record of 39-35.

Athletic Administration Career

Transitioning from coaching to administration, Gauthier served as the athletic director at the NAIA level at Briar Cliff University in 1996-97. He moved to the NCAA Division I level in 1997 where he served a year as the fund raiser for the athletic department before being promoted to Athletic Director in 1998. Gauthier served in that position for five years. He also served for two years, Idaho State University, Southwest Minnesota State University, and California State University Monterey Bay.

Professor and Author

Gauthier was hired in 2008 to lead the Athletic Administration master's degree program at Idaho State University in Meridian. He serves as an Associate Professor in the Sport Science and Physical Education Department at Idaho State University where he teaches graduate courses in Sports Leadership, Philosophy of Athletics, Sports Marketing, Sports Finance, and Athletics and the Law. Gauthier has also published several books and journal articles. His book Getting Hired in College Sports is a best seller within the sports industry. Other books include Execute for Success and the soon to be released The Positive Leader.
