Description

This hotel building is the historical house of Ananda Ranga Pillai, dubash of Joseph Dupleix (governor general of the French establishment in India).

It had been occupied since 1952 by the Department of Education, during the French occupation known as "Instruction Public", whose board is still above the entrance door. The department was about to vacate the building as it had been declared unsafe.

The mansion which houses the Hotel de l’Orient dates back to the late 1760s when Pondicherry was rebuilt.
