History

The municipality of Horg was established as a municipality in 1841 when the municipality of Støren was divided into Horg, Støren, and Soknedal. The initial population of the new municipality of Horg was 2,374. On 1 January 1964, Horg was merged with Flå, Hølonda, Melhus, and part of Buvik to form a new, larger municipality of Melhus. Prior to the merger, Horg had a population of 2,560.

Name

The municipality was named after the old Horg farm (Old Norse: hǫrgr), since the first church was built there. The name comes from the word meaning "steep rock", since there is a steep cliff just east of the farm.
