The Hochschule Furtwangen University (HFU), formerly the Fachhochschule Furtwangen (FHF), is a German University of applied science in Furtwangen im Schwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Contents

The university dates back to a school for clock making founded in 1850 by Robert Gerwig. After World War II, the school was split into two branches, one for engineering, the other for job training. The first one became a Fachhochschule when this new kind of universities was introduced in the early 1970s.

Major highlights

SMART SYSTEMS: ACQUIN accredited

The Smart Systems (SMA) master's programme replaced the Microsystems Engineering programme in the winter semester of 2011-12 .

The study programme is focussed on applications in the areas of:

  • Microtechnology

  • Embedded Systems
  • Optics
  • Algorithms and Test processes
  • Smart Systems are "intelligent" devices or systems which capture data from their environment over integrated sensors, process the data independently using electronics and related software, and react in an appropriate way to the signal by means of an actuator.

    Smart Systems are used in medical technology (e.g. intelligent implants), production engineering, the automotive industry (e.g. driver assistance systems), logistics, safety technology and information and communications technology. Safety aspects, reliability, miniaturization, energy consumption and intelligent data processing are critical factors in the development of intelligent systems. At Furtwangen University interdisciplinary technology development research projects are carried out on both the manufacture of miniaturized sensors and actuators which capture and process signals and on the development of embedded systems.

    Clock museum

    The Deutsche Uhrenmuseum (German clock museum) is located right in the geographic center of clock making in the Black Forest. Its 150-year-old collection of Black Forest Clocks is the most extensive of its kind in the world. It allows fascinating insights at the history, tradition and culture of the Black Forest region.

    Clocks from abroad, too, have been part of the collection as early as the 19th century. Purchases by the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, notably the collection of Mr. Hellmut Kienzle in 1975, added to the international collection. A further emphasis of today’s collection is on quartz clocks as well as everyday clocks. With its more that 8,000 items, the collection presents a multi-faceted and international picture of phenomenon that is time.
