The first Top 100 DJs poll was open to public for voting in 1997. Previously, only persons involved in the dance music industry were allowed to vote in the polls. In 1997, the website of DJ Magazine wasn't founded yet, which was why voters had to submit their votes via mail. It was estimated that at least 700 people voted in the 1997 DJ Mag poll. In 1998, votes were accepted by email. In 1999, only four women were ranked in the poll.

In 2001, votes were from over 50 countries with more than 500 DJs nominated. In 2002, the vote went up by 20% with 38,481 voters. In 2003, 61,529 votes were counted. Voters from more than 120 countries had participated.
