The Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia is a volume emanating from the Centre for Western Australian History at the University of Western Australia. The project was started in 2003, and developed further after the celebration of the 175 anniversary of the state in 2004. The University of Western Australia Press published the volume in mid June 2009.

Context

The two earlier comparable projects were J.S Battye's Cyclopedia of Western Australia in 1912, and Tom Stannages 1981 collection A New History Of Western Australia.

It will become the outstanding reference for researchers, teachers, students and the general public throughout Australia enabling them to locate information about significant events, institutions, people and places, themes and topics in the history of Western Australia.

Some time after the actual publication of the volume - an index was announced The volume was also short listed in the Western Australian Premier's Book award

The Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia has more than 300 contributors and through this collaboration has become the "People’s Encyclopedia" – a gift to the people of Western Australia from the historians of Western Australia.
