Tanihara was born in Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan. He has won 14 tournaments on the Japan Golf Tour and featured in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking with his highest ranking coming in June 2017 when he reached 47th. He represented Japan at the 2007 Omega Mission Hills World Cup with Tetsuji Hiratsuka. He is sponsored by ISPS.
