History and location

The school's Heads Lane site is centred on Tranby House, originally built in 1807 by local Kingston upon Hull merchant John Barkworth. After Barkworth's death in 1945, the house was bequeathed to the local education authority to become a school, which it did in 1947 as Tranby High School. The house is an almost exact duplicate of the now-demolished Tranby House, and Hessle Mount, now an independent private preparatory school. Tranby House was the home of Algernon Barkworth, a descendant of John Barkworth, who survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic. In 1967, Tranby House became a Grade II listed building to ensure its history and architecture are protected.

The school is now all on one site due to the new build which was completed January 2016. Since achieving academy status (The Hessle Academy Community Trust), the sixth form remains part of a consortium with Wolfreton School and Cottingham High School which was established in 2009. Pupils study post-16 courses at partnership schools. The school is also in a federation with Penshurst Primary School.

Ofsted inspections

During Ofsted's school inspection in April 2013, the school was rated "Requires improvement (Grade 3)" in all aspects. Ofsted carried out a further Section 8 Inspection in June 2013, and most shortfalls found during April's inspection still existed. In January 2015, an additional Ofsted report indicated that the school had improved for "overall effectiveness, leadership and management, behaviour and safety of pupils, teaching, achievement, and the sixth form."

School uniform

In September 2012, the school uniform became a white shirt and tie, with a choice of v-neck, cardigan or slipover, and a blazer, all with the school logo. Black trousers and black shoes are worn. Sixth formers have a clothing option of choice.
