Herbert Fries (1 March 1925 – 6 January 2014) was a highly decorated Oberfahnrich in the Fallschirmjager during World War II. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Herbert Fries was captured by American troops in May 1945 and held until July 1947. He died in January 2014, aged 88.
