The firm sued in the Malaysian High Court when government officials seized an HSC rice transshipment in 2006. The Malaysian Government won the case on 10 October 2009 but the ruling was eventually overturned by the Court of Appeal in August 2012.
1950–89: Founding and incorporation
The company was founded by the late Heng Siew Chiang after his arrival in Tawau, Malaysia from Chaoyang, China. At that time, it was renowned for selling household goods on the Dunlop Street and the Belian Street, registered as "Corp. Heng Siew Chiang". Following the formation of Malaysia in 1976, the corporation became "Kedai Heng Siew Chiang" (Malay for Heng Siew Chiang's Shop) before becoming today's "Heng Siew Chiang Sdn Bhd" in the late 1970s.
1990–present: Change of director and expansions
Heng Tiang Shin, fourth son of the late Heng's first wife, took over the family business from his late father in the early 1990s as the Managing Director. He is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, having qualified in the UK since 1983.
Today, the company has diversified into transshipment business and plantations. However, HSC is still maintaining its core business in offering a wide variety of local and overseas groceries at the lowest possible prices.
