Etymology

The specific name, damelii, is in honor of German entomologist Edward Dämel, who collected Australian specimens for Museum Godeffroy.

Geographic range

H. damelii is endemic to Australia, and is found in southeastern Queensland and north-central New South Wales.

Description

H. damelii is a small snake. Adults may attain a total length of 38 cm (15 in), which includes a tail 6 cm (2.4 in) long. It is olive dorsally, and yellowish white ventrally. In adults the head is darker than the body, and in juveniles the head is black.

Venom

The venom is mild, contains procoagulants, causes local pain and swelling, but is unlikely to cause fatalities in humans.

Reproduction

This species bears live young.
